Līmen for Three Gayageums, One Voice, and One Pak (2012) is a composition written for Aura Gayageum Ensemble. The work is built on creating a social dynamic between the performers based on the liminal spaces found both within times of uncertainty and within rituals. The three blindfolded Gayageum players demonstrate this uncertainty while the emergence of one of them as a playful vocalist represents the notion of the trickster. The work also plays with notions of Korean court music rituals (through the Pak player who serves as a timekeeper/observer throughout the piece) and references to Hwang Byungki and Hong Shinja’s masterpiece 1975 Migung (or Labyrinth).
