Performing tomorrow night in Tokyo

Tomorrow night, I’ll be performing in my first concert for 2008 here in Tokyo with Kawol’s Harmonic Motion (click here for his youtube site, or here for his myspace). The music will be a mix of blues, rock, middle eastern classics and taqasim (improvisation), and plenty of experimentation in between.

Performing @ Elham!

As mentioned here, I will be one of the performers in the upcoming Elham event (TOMORROW!).
I will be performing music on the Oud as an accompaniment to a poetry recital by Hameed Al Qaed.
Feel free to come to the event and enjoy an evening of words, sights and sounds.

In the very last moment, I was asked to perform in a comparative concert in a Buddhist Temple somewhere between Tokyo and Chiba-prefecture. The three instruments involved were the Oud (the instrument I play), the Renaissance/Baroque Lute (the son of the person who invited played these two instruments) and the Biwa (Japanese Lute that [...]

And so a week’s worth of orientation sessions about the graduate school of Economics and living in the new dormitory I just moved into has come to an end. This weekend will be symbolically silent, accentuating the proverbial silence that always precedes a storm. In my case, my “storm” would be my graduate studies here [...]

A particularly ‘Odd’ fellow has been getting on my case, asking me to write a new entry. This is the message he sent me,
“write a new post hasan. 3awwwart rasna (Bahraini Arabic that roughly translates to “You’re giving us such a headache” - i.e., you’re annoying us). I visit ur blog a bizillion times a [...]

Yup, “Diwan Al-Qalb” is happening in just a few more days. I’ve been looking forward to this event - which will be my first proper solo recital in Tokyo (despite playing music in a number cultural events and big concert halls around Japan both alone and with other musicians).
Here’s an explanation of the title. I [...]

Well, I’ve been in Tokyo for a while now after an - engaging - trip to Bahrain (No. “engaging” does not involve anyone getting married - or even thinking about it - by the way). I’ve been busy lately (or so I tell myself) with things: Reading as much Kafka humanly possible. Trying to [...]

Well, the wonderful Kamilya Jubran had a concert in Bahrain on Monday, March 5th. I went nearly an hour and a half before the performance because I wanted good seats and didn’t want to risk it. I arrived (along with my parents) so early, that we got the best seats in the house - in [...]

I was asked to attend a Shakuhachi performance. For those of you who don’t know much about the Shakuhachi, it is a traditional Japanese flute made from a single reed of Bamboo. The performer that evening was a young man, as old as me, performing on musical instruments he had made on his own. When [...]

… and ALL for valid reasons! Trust me.

OTO-YA-KIN-TOKI - The Best Ethnic Music Live-House in Tokyo: On the night of the 26th of July,I returned from another SUPER-AMAZING-ELECTRIFYING-(*mad lib here*) live performance at this little live-house in Nishi-Ogikubo in the “SILK ROAD” District of this lively little town on the Chuo-Line between Ogikubo and Kichijouji [...]
