An Unfortunate Accident in the Dormitory

For the past week, I’ve been thinking a lot about an unfortunate accident that happened in my dormitory: An 18-year old freshman died of alcohol poisoning. As the circumstances of the accident have not been confirmed, I am not at liberty to talk much about how it happened or the different rumors I’ve heard. All I know is that someone young with a promising future ahead of him is gone. Even though I didn’t know who he was, I feel as though I lost a close friend. My deepest condolences go to his family in this difficult time.

For more information on alcohol poisoning and how to detect its symptoms (and possibly save a life), please read: This, this and this.

The president of Hitotsubashi University issued a statement about the incident one day after it happened saying that the police are currently looking into the reasons behind the death. He also extends his condolences to the grieving family. The letter (in Japanese) is pasted below, and can also be read on: http://www.hit-u.ac.jp/function/outside/non_coll/080428.pdf.

Once again, I am saddened by this tragedy and I extend my deepest condolences to his family.
