I don’t usually get offended by “literature” or art of any kind.. But, when I read this so-called poem on an email forwarded to me, I started to fume. Basically, this “poem” (translating to “Girls of 2006″) in a way states that in our current time, GIRLS/WOMEN dress badly, misbehave and are very superficial and act in a way that does not “correspond with our oh-so-perfect society”. The writer of this poem is Mr. Abdulrahman Al-Rafi’i, who is a Bahraini “poet” who always writes his poems in one of the the local dialects in Bahrain (There is more than one dialect in Bahrain, by the way, despite it being so small - and his dialect isn’t necessarily representative). When I was in highschool, he gave us a visit and recited some of his so-called poetry. Most of the poems he recited back then were flirtatious and jolly. Now, he seems to contradict himself by saying - in effect - that all girls - and particularly in Bahrain - are bad because they are only busy with looking pretty and chasing money. Mr. Al-Rafi’i uses words like “COW”, “HAIR AS MESSY AS A ROOSTER’S”, “WASTING MONEY IN SHOPPING MALLS”, “ONLY RIDES FANCY CARS”, “PARTYING EVERY NIGHT TILL 2.00AM”, and “LOVE TO TALK BEHIND PEOPLE’S BACKS” to describe women. Now, remember, women are our mothers, sisters, daughters and partners in life, Mr. Rafi’i. Thanks for describing them so gently. This kind of backwards talk is a waste of words and paper - and is a reflection of the mindset of a proportion of Bahrainis who “say” things just to “please” those with high social standings, while you know they are lying through their teeth. Shame on you, Mr. Rafi’i, for taking art for granted.

هذا زمان المسخرة هذا زمان المسخرة
جوال ومشيه بفشخره في وسط السوق متبخترة
والكحله في وسط العيون والشفايف زود محمرة
والصدر تتعمد تفكه تخليه مفتوح ما تزرره
هذا زمان المسخرة هذا زمان المسخرة
لو يسألها ذاك الفقير وين انتي رايحه يامره
جاه الجواب يبهدله وتقول كلام بيقهره
باروح السوق ابشتري فستان للحفلة المزهرة
وتروح الصالة كنها عروس مزينه ومعدله ومعطرة
وما ترجع إلا في الصباح وتشيل الزينة الساحرة
هذا زمان المسخرة هذا زمان المسخرة
آخر الشهر تقبض الراتب وتروح المجمع وتبعثره
وتعير ذاك الفقير لو إني مثل غيري ما عشت واياك محسره
شوف فلانة وشوف علانه عايشين عيشه ميسره
فله جميلة وسياره كشخه ما هو مثلك تركبني سياره مكسره

لين استلمت ذاك التلفون تبمبع مثل البقرة
واتحش في الناس هذا طويل وهذا قصير وحكيها كله مسخره
وفلانه اليوم مطلقه وفلان ماتت له مره
وكلامها أصلا ماله أساس بس هذره فاضيه وبربره
والوقت يسرع والهاتف يحسب أمواله تروح مهدره

كانت تجلس ويا الأذان وتصلي لله وتشــــــــــكره
وتدعي للناس الطيبين بنفس طيبه وطاهرة

مو مثل بنات هذا الزمن تركب ويه الأجنبي بيدها روج ومنظره
وقصت الشعر أخر موديل كأنها ديك منفوش جناحه وعرعره
والعبايه تحطها على الكتف حتى الشعر ماتستره
ولو تقول لها هذا حرام قالت كلامك كله دندره
كلامك كله ما يعني لي شيء أني فتاه متطورة
لا يخدعونك باسم حضارة هالزمن آخرتها تالي المقبرة
وآخر كلامي بالصلاة على النبي واياه العترة الطاهرة
